Meet the Makers - Petra Martonova, SVAR:ØG
Welcome to #MeettheMakers
These are the people, the movers the shakers, the makers and doers. Right here they share their story with us, for you, their journey, their products, along with tips and insight for your making, so without further ado
So, let's start with why the name, in your case SVAR:ØG?
Svarog is a name of slavic pagan god of fire. I come from part of Europe where hundreds of years ago my ancestors believed in this entity and I always had a very strong connection to old customs and traditions. I, however, made it look quite nordic because I love the simplicity and cleanliness of Scandinavian products and design.
What’s different about what you do at SVAR:ØG, what do you see as the USP?
I wanted a product that would be natural, eco friendly and as sustainable as possible. I believe nature has loads to offer to us and people are losing that connection in this modern day and age. I am able to bring nature back to people’s lives by giving them a 100% natural product that is not only good for the environment, but also for people’s homes and their spirits.
So, what got you making, what was your inspiration?
Candle obsession and curiosity. I was burning through so many candles in my home, and one day I thought how about I try to make some myself. I didn’t realise how much work and dedication is involved in making candles. I did a candle making workshop and read up a lot of information on the internet and forums. I can say that almost everything I know I’ve learned myself by trialling and failing at times.
What is your studio space / lab like? What’s important to you?
The space definitely has to be organised and tidy before I even start to work on something. I make all the products from my home and our spare room became my office slash storage room. I am hoping as the business grows in the next year or so, I’ll be able to rent a proper studio space and workshop.

What’s the best thing about your job / business?
I was always on the creative side of things, but never actually used my hands to make stuff. So it’s great I’ve found this hidden talent in me. It’s also great to know that people love what I make and that I am not harming the environment in the process. I also need to mention the connections/friendships I’ve made since I started and all the support I get from customers, friends, followers and other small businesses is priceless.
What was the very first product you made (and sold)?
The first ever candle I made was a frankincense, patchouli and peppermint soy candle. I loved the scent, however it never made it to production. The first ever candle I sold was a christmassy scented candle with Cinnamon + Mandarin essential oils.
Which is your favourite SVAR:ØG product?
It’s hard to say, it’s like choosing your favourite child. But I am a sucker for patchouli, so probably the Patchouli + Cedarwood candle is my favourite product.
If you didn’t run SVAR:ØG, what would you be doing?
I studied photography and been taking photos for living for the last 10 years. So I’d be doing that.
Why do you buy from us here at Makers Ingredients?
When I was looking for a supplier, I wanted to make sure that the products are natural, vegan, good quality and reasonably priced. Makers Ingredients offer all of that and I’m pleased with my experience so far!
What’s your favourite Makers Ingredients product?
I think it’d have to be the peppermint essential oil. I tend to use it in my room diffuser a lot - it’s fantastic!
Finally, if you could give other Makers any tips or advice, what would they be?
First of all - don’t be scared to start. There’s many stories of entrepreneurs who failed at first. Don’t let these stories put you off - just create something awesome and stay positive. It takes a lot of researching, trialling and failing, but with your patience and dedication you’ll get there one day! And you’ll thank yourself for sticking through :)
